My Secret Home Remedy for Fevers

Have you thought about living off-grid with the satisfaction of being self-sustaining? I know I’d love to get to that point one day. I dream about being able to grow my own food in my garden, generate power from the sun, moving water, and wind, raising my own livestock for protein, etc. The one thing you will also need to have is knowledge of how to treat various ailments on your own. One such ailment is the onset of a fever.

Regardless of what causes the fever, there are home remedies you can use to treat the underlying issue when you don’t have access to acetaminophen to reduce the symptom. But you might say “…I didn’t know there were home remedies to treat a fever?” Here’s what Papa says: There are three secret ingredients that you need to have on hand at all times (along with a bathtub) to combat the cause of a fever.

  • Epsom salt
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Lavender oil

Let me first say that I am not a doctor, I don’t play one on tv, and I don’t pretend to be one either. Through my own research I have used the below method to treat fevers in my family for years with great success. 100% success in fact. I use this method to treat fevers related to teething babies, cold, flu, allergies, etc. Understand now that you can use this method at your own risk. Now that my disclaimers are out of the way, on to my personal usage method.

My Method

Remember I said above you need a bathtub? I use the following items every 2 – 3 hours:

  • A bathtub full of tepid water
  • Half a cup of apple cider vinegar
  • One cup of epsom salt with four drops of lavender oil dripped on it

Setup the bath

I had to look this up many years ago too, so know that tepid means lukewarm or moderately warm. This is not one of those hot relax your muscles kind of baths. The water needs to be room temp – not cold or hot. Once it’s full, I measure and pour in one half cup of apple cider vinegar. Since I’ve become a bit of a health nut I always use an organic brand. You can pick what you think is best.

Next I measure out one cup of epsom salt, but I never use one with any added fragrances or additives. The only ingredient listed on the label should be epsom salt. I usually find this in the pharmacy section of the grocery store – not with the other bath soaps and such. Plus, it’s the cheapest version.

Get the epsom salt ready

Before I put the epsom salt into the bath, I like to put about four drops of natural lavender oil on the epsom salt. Then I shake the epsom salt into the bath and stir it in there so that it dissolves. Now, please note the lavender oil I use is NOT the cheap stuff you get from your local bargain box store. If the brand of oil you have is not recommended for ingestion, don’t use it. I have tried several brands of lavender oil, but my favorite and most effective lavender oil that I have used is the one sold by Young Living.

Other ways to use lavender oil

In between the detox baths you can put a drop or two of lavender oil on the bottom of your feet and then cover them with socks. I also like to rub a drop on my forehead and temples.

I have no idea how the science works, but I do know that this home remedy works on fevers. I have used this method over the past several years, and have never seen a fever last longer than 36 hours. Regarding the temperature ranges, I’ve used this method for fevers ranging from 99 to 104.5. But just like anything else, use your own judgement if you need medical attention.

So what home remedies do you use? Any favorite or common items you keep on hand?
